On the ceremony held at Bayan Palace on 22 January 2019, His Highness the Amir expressed his appreciation of Ethiopia’s peace accord with Eritrea, and the role played by the country in bringing peace and stability to the Horn. His Highness the Amir also expressed his gratitude for Ethiopia’s support to the State of Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
Ambassador Abdulfatah, on his part, said Ethiopia highly values its relation with the State of Kuwait and supports the Kuwaiti initiative for resolving the Gulf crisis. He also hailed the Amir’s wisdom and efforts for solving the crisis peacefully.
The Ambassador added the two countries share the same historical and cultural values, which served as a spring board for the relations to improve at various times. Ambassador Abdulfatah also expressed his gratitude for Kuwait’s contribution to the development endeavors of Ethiopia in infrastructure, electrification and other projects.
Ambassador Abdulfatah noted Ethiopia’s contribution to Islam in receiving the companions of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon Him), who fled persecution by the Quraysh tribe in Makkah. His Highness the Amir reiterated ‘‘we are relatives’’, and assured the Ambassador that he will provide every support to him in his effort to strengthen the existing bilateral ties between the two countries.
Formal diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Kuwait started in 1967; and, both countries opened their respective embassies in 1997.
